NIGHTS OF SIN 🌃 Chapter 11: The Climax of Choice

Kayla stared at her phone, the dial tone from Bayo’s disconnected line buzzing in the silence of her corporate office. One hour. Bayo had given her one hour to betray Ethan and return the ledger, or face utter destruction.

She knew one thing for certain: she couldn't call Ethan. Not on his burner phone, not on any line. That call would be instantly traced by Bayo’s network, compromising the delivery in Abuja and destroying their only chance at freedom. She was entirely alone in this final, terrifying choice.

She looked at her watch. Ethan had told her the anonymous drop was scheduled for 3:00 PM. It was 2:30 PM.

Kayla stood up and walked to the wall of windows, looking out at the traffic-choked streets of Lagos. Bayo thought he had her cornered. He assumed she would choose self-preservation—her career, her reputation—over a shared fate with a man who dealt in shadows. He was counting on her weakness.

But the woman who staged a corporate accident and stole a biometric key was no longer the cautious executive she once was. Their shared nights of sin had changed her.

Kayla walked back to her desk and grabbed a small, secure flash drive containing her most valuable professional files and her emergency offshore contacts. She then made a call, not to Ethan, but to her most trusted contact in the firm’s IT department—a young woman who owed Kayla a significant, life changing favor.

"Aisha, I need you to do something for me," Kayla said, her voice low and completely steady, radiating authority. "I need you to crash the internal servers. Not the client databases, just the main communications hub—email, company landlines, everything. Do it at exactly 3:00 PM. Make it look like a massive, system-wide ransomware attack. I want chaos."

"Crash the servers? Madam, that’s insane! That will ruin us!" Aisha whispered in horror.

"It will buy us time. Do it, Aisha. And I will ensure you get a new job with triple the salary in Dubai by next week. Fail, and you’ll be the scapegoat for a mistake you didn't even make. You owe me this."

Kayla hung up. Bayo wanted a response; she was giving him a distraction. If Bayo’s people were monitoring her calls and emails, the immediate digital shutdown would confirm their worst fear: that Kayla was making a coordinated move, giving Ethan the cover he needed.

In Abuja: The Final Drop

Hundreds of kilometres away in Abuja, Ethan was approaching the government building. He was dressed like a simple courier, his heart pounding a brutal rhythm against his ribs. He had the hard drive in a secure, double-lined envelope, ready for the anonymous drop box.

It was 2:55 PM.

He saw the area was clear—no immediate security threats, no familiar faces from Bayo’s network. He moved swiftly towards the drop point.

At precisely 3:00 PM, just as he reached out to drop the envelope, his satellite phone buzzed urgently. It was a coded, frantic text message from one of his surveillance assets in Lagos: "Lagos internal comms down. Total lockdown. Fire."

Ethan froze. He knew instantly that this was Kayla. Not a warning, but a signal—she was actively generating the chaos they needed. He felt a fierce wave of adrenaline and gratitude.

He shoved the envelope into the drop box. The ledger was delivered. It was now in the hands of the authorities, anonymous and secure.

In Lagos: The Reckoning

Back in Lagos, the Sterling Assets building descended into pandemonium. Alarms blared, screens went dark, and panicked colleagues were rushing out of their offices, believing their entire system had been hacked.

Kayla’s desk phone rang, piercing the emergency siren. It was Bayo.

"What did you do!" Bayo roared, his composure finally broken by the chaos.

Kayla picked up the phone, her voice cold and resonant against the blaring alarms. "I bought us time, Mr. Bayo. You should have stuck to corporate acquisitions."

"You chose him? You chose ruin? You fool! I'm sending my people to you now. You won't leave that building."

"You can send whoever you want," Kayla countered, rising from her desk and picking up her small travel bag. "But while you are focusing on the distraction I created here in Lagos, I suggest you ask your contacts in Abuja to check their mail. The foundation is rotten, Bayo. And the books are now public."

Kayla hung up and threw the burner phone onto the floor, crushing it under her heel.

She didn't run. She walked calmly toward the emergency stairs, blending into the frantic stream of evacuating employees. She looked like a concerned executive, not a co-conspirator who had just helped trigger the downfall of a powerful criminal network. She had sacrificed her perfect, legitimate life, but she had secured her survival and completed their mission.

The silence that had followed Ethan’s disappearance was over, replaced by the chaotic roar of a city finally facing its secrets.
