THE KING’S LAST DAUGHTER

Chapter One: The Night the Drum Went Silent

The royal drums of Ndelemba Kingdom had beaten without rest for over forty years.
They beat when a child was born.
They beat when warriors returned from battle.
They beat when the king smiled.

But on this night, the drums were silent.

Not because there was peace.
Not because there was sleep.

They were silent because King Omenka was dead.

The news crept through the palace like cold wind — slow, heavy, unforgiving. Palace guards dropped their spears. Servants froze where they stood. Even the torches flickered as though afraid.

No one dared cry yet.

In the inner chambers, the king lay still on his carved wooden bed, eyes half open, mouth slightly parted — as if he had tried to speak but death had silenced him.

They said he went to bed strong.
They said he ate well.
They said he laughed.

By morning, he was gone.

Outside the palace walls, Princess Adanna woke with a sharp gasp.

Her wrapper was soaked with sweat. Her heart pounded like it was trying to escape her chest. In her dream, she had seen fire climbing the palace walls. She had heard chains dragging on the ground. And a woman’s voice — soft but firm — had called her name.

“Adanna…”

She sat up slowly, pressing her palm to her chest.

“Just a dream,” she whispered, though her voice shook.

Before she could stand, the palace gong sounded.

Once.
Twice.
Three times.

Her blood ran cold.

That gong was only sounded for one reason.

Death.

Servants ran past her doorway, wailing openly now. Somewhere in the palace, a woman screamed the king’s name and collapsed.

Adanna stepped into the corridor just as Prince Obieze, the first son, stormed past her. His eyes were red, not with tears, but with something darker.

Power.

Behind him came Prince Tobenna, pale and shaking, muttering prayers under his breath.

No one spoke to Adanna.

They never did.

She was only a daughter. The last one. Born after the queen had died, born when the king was already old. A girl in a palace built for men.

By noon, the elders gathered.

The air was thick with incense and fear. Chief Priest Udechukwu stood before the sacred royal staff — the symbol of kingship passed down for generations.

Prince Obieze stepped forward confidently.

“I am the first son,” he declared. “The throne is mine.”

The priest nodded and handed him the staff.

The moment Obieze touched it, the ground shook.

Gasps filled the hall.

The staff grew hot — glowing red — forcing Obieze to drop it with a cry. The smell of burnt flesh filled the air.

Murmurs rose.

“This has never happened…”
“The gods are angry…”

Prince Tobenna stepped forward next, hands trembling.

“I will try,” he said.

The staff did not burn him.

But it did not respond either.

It lay lifeless in his hands — cold, heavy, dead.

The priest’s face darkened.

“The throne has rejected both sons,” he said quietly.

Fear swept through the palace like fire through dry grass.

In the corner of the hall, unnoticed by all, Adanna felt her chest burn.

She gasped, clutching her wrapper as something warm ran down her palm.

She looked down.

Blood.

Before she could scream, a whisper brushed her ear — the same voice from her dream.

“The crown is yours, daughter of tears.”

Adanna staggered back, eyes wide with terror.

Because deep in her soul, she knew one thing:

The throne had not rejected the princes.

It had chosen her.
