When Tosin called asking to see me, I wasn’t afraid this time.
I wasn’t shaking or angry.
Just curious.

Her voice had been soft, almost timid on the phone:
“Aunty Kemi, please… can we talk? I won’t take much of your time.”

I agreed.
Not because I wanted to, but because peace sometimes requires facing the things you avoided.

When I arrived at their house, her mother wasn’t home. Tosin sat on a low stool in the backyard, rocking her baby gently. She looked tired… older somehow. Motherhood had changed her, matured her.

“Aunty Kemi,” she said as I approached, “thank you for coming.”

I sat opposite her, leaving enough space between us.
“I’m here. What did you want to talk about?”

She took a breath that seemed to carry weight.

“Aunty… I called you because I want peace.”

The word hung in the air—peace.
A word I had been craving.

“I want that too,” I replied.

She nodded, tears gathering in her eyes.
“When you came back from training, I couldn’t even look you in the eyes. You were kind to me, you fed me, you helped me—even when you didn’t know I was the reason for your pain.”

I listened quietly.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me,” she said quickly, “because I don’t deserve that. But I want to do what is right. And that means creating boundaries.”

My eyebrows lifted slightly.
I wasn’t expecting that.

She continued, voice trembling:

“I don’t want your home scattered. I don’t want to be a problem between you and your husband forever. Kunle is the father of my child, but he is your husband. I won’t come to your house anymore. I won’t call him unless it is strictly about the baby. No friendship. No closeness. Nothing more.”

I exhaled slowly, absorbing her words.

She wiped her cheeks.

“I’m already making arrangements so I can move to my aunt’s place in Ilorin for a while. I think it’s best—for you, for Kunle, even for me.”

My chest tightened with surprise.

“You want to relocate?” I asked softly.

She nodded.
“Yes. I need a fresh start too. Everywhere I turn here reminds me of my mistake.”

For the first time since everything happened, I saw her not as “the girl who betrayed me,” but as a young woman who made a terrible decision… and carried the consequences every day.

“Aunty Kemi,” she whispered, “your children… they smile at me whenever they see me. It makes me feel even worse. I want them to grow in peace. I want you to rebuild your life with Kunle without feeling like I’m a shadow in the corner.”

Her baby began to fuss, and she gently patted his back.

When she looked up again, her eyes held something new.

Strength. Not boldness. But strength.

“I called you,” she continued, “because I didn’t want to disappear and make you think I ran away from responsibility. I want you to hear it from me. I’m not trying to hold onto Kunle. I’m not trying to stay in his life. I will raise my child, and he will support him, but that is all.”

I breathed out slowly — relief washing through me like cool water.

“Tosin…” I said, choosing my words carefully, “I appreciate your honesty. I appreciate the responsibility you’re taking. This… this is a mature step.”

She lowered her head.
“Thank you.”

We sat in silence for a moment, listening to the baby’s soft breathing.

Finally, I said, “I don’t hate you, Tosin. I was hurt… deeply. But hate would eat me alive. Peace is better.”

She covered her face and cried silently.
Not loud, dramatic tears.
Gentle, grateful ones.

After a while, she whispered, “Can I ask for one last thing?”

“What is it?”

“When the time is right… not now… but someday… can you… forgive me?”

My throat tightened.

“I can’t promise when,” I replied honestly.
“But I believe I will get there.”

Her shoulders relaxed, like she had been waiting to exhale.

As I walked home, my steps felt lighter.
Not because everything was perfect,
But because something heavy had shifted.

Tosin was leaving.
Boundaries were set.
Kunle and I could breathe again.
And the road ahead seemed clearer.

When I returned, the children ran to hug me. Tomi tugged at my wrapper.

“Mummy, you look happy,” she said smiling.

I smiled back.
“I feel… peaceful.”

Later that night, I sent Kunle a short message:

Tosin won’t be around much longer. She wants peace. We all do. We will talk soon — all three of us — to set clear boundaries. After that, we can decide what happens next.

His reply came quickly:

Thank you, Kemi. I’m ready for whatever steps you want us to take.

I lay down on my bed with a deep breath.

For the first time since everything fell apart, I felt something warm in my chest.

Hope.
