The Day I Found Out One of My Staff Was Sleeping in the Office
Last year, I had this staff member — quiet guy, always punctual. In fact, he was too punctual.
He’d show up before everyone, and somehow still be around after everyone had left. At first, I thought he just really loved his job. You know, maybe he was trying to impress me or something.

But after a while, it started to feel… strange.
Why would someone hang around long after closing hours — especially when there’s no overtime?
One morning, I had to dash into the office around 6:30am to pick something up before a meeting. The place was still dark, but I noticed light peeking from the lounge area.
I walked in and there he was — curled up on the couch, wrapper around his body, rechargeable fan blowing beside him.
My heart dropped.

He jumped up immediately and tried to act normal.
“Good morning ma,” he said, clearly embarrassed, his voice dry with sleep.
I didn’t say much. Just nodded and went into my office. But that image didn’t leave my head.
Later that day, I called him in. I asked gently, “Why are you sleeping in the office?”
At first, he tried to brush it off, then his shoulders dropped.

He told me his landlord had locked him out — padlocked the door. Rent expired. And he had nowhere to go.
No family nearby. Didn't want to burden anyone. He’d been bathing in the office restroom and pretending like everything was fine.
That thing touched me.
I gave him one week off. That same day, I quietly paid for a small apartment near the office. Nothing too much. Just somewhere he could rest his head in peace.

I handed him the key and said,
“You don’t have to carry things alone. We’re not just coworkers — we’re humans. We show up for each other.”
He broke down. I almost did too.
Today, he’s one of the most loyal staff I’ve ever had. Sometimes, people aren’t lazy. They’re just tired… and hiding it well.
Pay attention. Small kindness can change someone’s entire life.
