Nigeria Formalizes Key Diplomatic Appointments to UK, France, and UN

In a decisive move to bolster its global standing, the Nigerian government has formalized the appointments of new envoys to the United Kingdom, France, and the United Nations. This development follows a period of approximately ten months during which many of Nigeria's foreign missions were managed by chargés d'affaires rather than substantive ambassadors.

The New Envoys

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has selected a mix of career and non-career diplomats to represent the nation in these strategic roles:

  • United Kingdom: Ambassador Aminu Dalhatu, a seasoned diplomat and former ambassador to South Korea, has been appointed as the High Commissioner-designate to the UK.

  • France: Ambassador Ayodele Oke has been designated to lead the mission in Paris.

  • United Nations: Senator Jimoh Ibrahim has been named the Permanent Representative to the UN.

Other notable appointments include Colonel Lateef Are for the United States and Usman Isa Dakingari Suleiman for Türkiye.

The Road to Formalization: The 'Agrément'

The formalization of these roles was finalized in late March and early April 2026 after the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs received agrément—the formal consent from a host country to accept a specific diplomat—from the respective governments.

According to Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, the UK, France, and the US were among the first ten nations to provide this necessary diplomatic approval. This process is a prerequisite under international diplomatic standards before an envoy can officially assume duties.

Restoring Nigeria's Global Influence

Since assuming office in May 2023, President Tinubu had faced criticism for leaving key diplomatic posts vacant. Stakeholders warned that the absence of full ambassadors could weaken Nigeria's bilateral engagements and influence in global affairs.

The current administration's strategy involved:

  1. Senate Screening: A list of 65 nominees was forwarded and screened by the National Assembly in December 2025.

  2. Strategic Deployment: Balancing 34 career diplomats with 33 non-career (political) appointees to ensure a blend of professional expertise and political alignment.

  3. Induction: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is now commencing a mandatory induction program for the designated envoys before they are dispatched to their respective posts.
