FG Pledges to Fund 10 Additional Mobile Power Stations to Boost National Grid

⚡

Abuja, Nigeria—President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has committed the Federal Government to mobilizing resources for the procurement and installation of 10 additional mobile power stations across the nation.

The pledge was made during a meeting on Monday at the State House with a delegation from Siemens Energy, led by Mr. Dietmar Siersdorfer, Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa. The move is part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria's electricity infrastructure under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI).

Power is 'Impossible Objective' Without Power

President Tinubu reaffirmed that the partnership with Siemens Energy remains central to his administration's vision for improving electricity supply, stimulating industrial growth, and enhancing livelihoods.1

“Let me affirm our government's commitment to this aspect. In addition to that, we are going to resource and find ways to fund the additional ten mobile stations as long as we follow this up,” the Presiden2t stated.

He stressed the critical role of electricity in national development, noting that education, healthcare, and transportation all depend on a reliable energy supply.

“Without power, it is an impossible objective. This is what we must achieve for this continent to see the glory of economic recovery and banishment of poverty. There is no industrial growth or economic development without power,” Tinubu added.

Progress on the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI)

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who was also at the meeting, provided an update on the progress of the PPI, which is a key program designed to overhaul Nigeria's power grid.

  • Current Achievements: He confirmed that Siemens Energy has already successfully delivered and commissioned 10 mobile substations and several power transformers, which have collectively added 984 megawatts (MW) of transmission capacity to the national grid.

  • Next Steps (Phase One): The Minister noted that plans are finalized for civil works mobilization on the first batch of Phase One of the project, which involves the upgrade and installation of five key substations in cities including Abeokuta, Offa, Ayede-Ibadan, Sokoto, and Onitsha. Two of these are targeted for completion by the end of 2026.

  • Batch Two Expansion: The commitment to the 10 additional mobile stations will likely fall under Phase One - Batch Two of the PPI, which is expected to cover a total of 16 new substations nationwide with a potential cumulative impact of over 4,000MW.

The government's continued funding commitment signals its determination to fast-track the PPI, which was initially conceived to increase Nigeria's power grid capacity from approximately 5,000MW to 25,000MW in three phases.

The additional mobile power stations are intended to provide flexible, quick-deployment solutions to address immediate capacity constraints across various parts of the national grid.
