Soccer and Vaccines: A Winning Combination in the Fight Against Cervical Cancer

How playing football can help protect girls from cervical cancer | AfricanewsIn a unique blend of sport and health, a recent girls' soccer tournament in Zimbabwe has sparked hope in the fight against cervical cancer. The 'Goal Getters' campaign, which combines the power of football with the importance of vaccination, is making waves across Africa as it aims to protect young girls from this deadly disease.

A Soccer Tournament with a Purpose
The Under-17 girls' tournament, organized by CAF and GAVI, brought together 200 players from six countries in December. The event was not just about winning or losing, but about spreading awareness and building confidence among young girls to trust the HPV vaccine. Nteboheleng Leticia Sooane, a 16-year-old player from Lesotho's Lishoeshoe soccer club, said participating in the tournament was 'very good' despite her team's loss in the final.

The Power of Vaccination
The HPV vaccine being administered to girls aged 9-14 can prevent up to 90% of cervical cancer cases. However, misinformation and stigma around reproductive health remain major obstacles. In Zimbabwe, where cervical cancer is the most common cancer among women, only two 10-year-old girls turned up for vaccination at a recent clinic, highlighting the need for targeted health education.

Breaking Down Barriers
Soccer-based initiatives like the 'Goal Getters' campaign are helping to bridge the gap between communities and healthcare services. By leveraging the popularity of football, organizers hope to create a safe space where girls can feel empowered to make informed decisions about their health. GAVI spokesman Olly Cann said, 'One of the great aspects of the Goal Getters campaign is that it enables us to blend two things that teenage girls are passionate about – sport and health.'

A Winning Combination
The success of the 'Goal Getters' campaign has sparked hope in the fight against cervical cancer. With expanded campaigns backed by governments and GAVI, Africa is intensifying HPV vaccination drives. Coverage for at least one dose of the HPV vaccine rose to 40% in 2023 from 28% the previous year, driven by these efforts.

As the 'Goal Getters' campaign continues to inspire young girls across Africa, it's clear that soccer and vaccination are a winning combination in the fight against cervical cancer. By harnessing the power of sport and health education, we can create a brighter future for generations to come.
