California Black Health Network Hosts Groundbreaking Conference on Black Mental Health

California Black Health Network to Host Behavioral & Mental Health Conference That Will Address Black Mental HealthIn a bold move to address the alarming rise in mental health challenges facing Black communities, the California Black Health Network (CBHN) is hosting a virtual Behavioral and Mental Health Conference. Scheduled for May 13th, this half-day event promises to shed light on the often-overlooked issues of toxic stress, suicide rates among Black men and boys, and increasing cases of Alzheimer's and dementia.

A Call to Action for Equity, Awareness, and Healing
The conference, held during Mental Health Awareness Month, aims to educate, inform, and empower practitioners, community members, thought leaders, policymakers, and researchers on the importance of culturally relevant care. According to Rhonda Smith, Executive Director of CBHN, 'Black communities continue to shoulder disproportionate mental health burdens that are rooted in systemic inequities, trauma, and limited access to culturally competent care.' This conference is designed to shine a light on these disparities while elevating actionable solutions and pathways toward wellness.

Featured Speakers and Thought Leaders
The event will feature an impressive lineup of experts, including Curley Bonds, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health; Tina Houston Armstrong, Ph.D., CEO Living Connected Psychological, Inc.; Monica Caffey, Ph.D., Academic Program Director & Professor, National University; and Kris Bennett, Global Director, Health Equity Initiatives & Men's Health – Movember. These thought leaders will share their insights on the links between chronic stress, behavioral health, and cognitive decline, as well as provide culturally relevant strategies for healing, prevention, and community resilience.

Addressing Systemic Inequities and Disparities
The conference highlights the pressing need to address systemic inequities and disparities in mental healthcare. According to the University of California, Los Angeles, California Health Interview Survey, about 18% of Black Californians have seriously thought about committing suicide, and more than 27% of those with serious psychological distress report not having a usual place to go for help and support. This conference aims to provide solutions-driven approaches to strengthen mental health outcomes throughout California's Black communities.

The CBHN Behavioral and Mental Health Conference is a crucial step towards promoting equity, awareness, and healing in Black communities. By bringing together leading experts and thought leaders, this event promises to spark meaningful conversations and inspire action towards creating a more just and compassionate society. Don't miss this opportunity to be part of the solution – register now for the virtual conference on May 13th.
